White House Observes Antibiotic Awareness Week: Presidential Message Released

Presidential Message and AR Progress Report Released during Antibiotic Awareness Week
The White House encourages Americans to learn more about antibiotic resistance and about what each of us can do to combat antibiotic resistance.
Monday Nov. 13, kicked off U.S. Antibiotic Awareness Week. To observe the week, the White House released a statement, Presidential Message on Antibiotic Awareness Week, 2017, recognizing the threat that resistance to antibiotics poses to our Nation’s health.
The White House statement committed to implementing the National Action Plan for Combating Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria (National Action Plan), a roadmap to identify instances of antibiotic resistance, stop the spread of resistance, and improve the prescribing and use of antibiotics.
To further observe the week, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), on behalf of the Interagency Combating Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria Task Force, released a Progress Report detailing the significant progress made during the first two years of implementation of the National Action Plan.
CDC is a global leader in efforts to meet National Action Plan goals, including improving antibiotic prescribing and use practices. CDC recognized Antibiotic Awareness Week with an updated educational effort, Be Antibiotics Aware: Smart Use, Best Care, to support the nation’s efforts to combat antibiotic resistance through improved use of these life-saving medications. These efforts are supported by CDC’s Antibiotic Resistance Solutions Initiative.
Though the United States has made progress towards optimal prescribing and use of antibiotics for patients, there is still room for improvement. CDC encourages Americans to learn more about antibiotic resistance and what each of us can do to confront this increasingly important public health issue. Prescribing the right antibiotic at the right time, in the right dose, and for the right duration helps fight antibiotic resistance, protects patients from unnecessary side effects, and helps ensure these life-saving medicines will be effective for future generations.
